 Voice Versus Text
 top of page

ChatGPT-3.5 is a remarkable creation by OpenAI, a renowned artificial intelligence research organization. It represents a significant leap in the world of artificial intelligence. It's a powerful AI language model that can understand and generate text just like a human would.

This achievement has been made possible through years of dedicated research and development by OpenAI's talented team of scientists and engineers. ChatGPT-3.5 has undergone extensive training using vast amounts of text data from the internet, books, and various other sources. This extensive training has equipped it with the knowledge and understanding to respond to a wide array of topics and questions. (Note that using this "data" also opens a huge question about copyright but that's for a more advanced book.)

In terms of its evolution, ChatGPT has come a long way. Earlier versions had obvious limitations, but with each new iteration, it has made substantial improvements, enhancing its capabilities and accuracy. The primary objective is to make it as helpful and capable as possible in natural language interactions. As an example, it is possible to "speak" to ChatGPT in both a browser and on your cell phone to pose questions. As an example of how helpful ChatGPT can be, you can ask it to help you set that up. I used the prompt "Explain the process in steps that will allow me to communicate with you by voice versus text", See the CHATGPT-3.5 response titled "Communicate by Voice" near the end of this booklet.

As a newcomer, you have the opportunity to explore ChatGPT's potential for various tasks, such as gathering information, generating text, or even assisting in creative brainstorming. We are going to gradually delve into its functionalities and guide you on how to effectively harness its capabilities.

 Let's Get Started
 top of page

ChatGPT-3.5 is remarkable for its ability to understand and respond to user prompts in a natural and contextually relevant manner. This proficiency is achieved through its extensive training, where it has been exposed to an immense amount of text and data from diverse sources.

When you provide a prompt or question, ChatGPT analyzes the input and generates text in response. It's like having a conversation with an extremely knowledgeable friend. One of the key strengths of ChatGPT is its versatility. It can be used for various tasks, including content creation, idea generation, research assistance, and even as a virtual assistant. This flexibility makes it a valuable tool for individuals, businesses, and researchers. As touched on earlier ChatGPT comes in 2 versions as of this writing, ChatGP-T3.5, on which this eBook is based, and ChatGPT-4.0 which has more extensive capabilities, not the least of which is the ability to reach out to the internet. Note that the 3.5 version is free to use and does have limitations while 4.0 is a paid version and its limitations are greatly reduced. Currently, the price for the 4.0 version is $20 a month if paid monthly, with a discount if paid annually. I'd suggest starting with the 3.5 version, especially for this eBook walk-through, and then going to the paid version if you feel the need, which I'm sure you will once you get a taste.

At this time, you should consider logging onto the OpenIA website and setting yourself up with an account because you'll want to try these prompts as we move along, and I'll bet you'll be experimenting on your own in short order. Open the OpenIA website Here ( https://openai.com/chatgpt ) to get your account set up. Once you have the account created, I highly suggest that you find the "Custom Instructions" option in the menu (lower left) and fill out the requested information to the best of your ability. Don't offer up anything too personal but be thorough. ChatGPT will use that input in its responses and the interaction between you and ChatGPT will become much more relaxed. It'll become like talking to an old friend in short order; it'll even refer to you by name though it didn't want to let me call it Sheila until I told it explicitly that I would be doing so in the "Custom Instructions". Pick a name and try it yourself. Keep in mind that you can change these "Custom Instructions" and restart ChatGPT to implement them or you can modify them in a prompt per usage.

 Simple Prompts
 top of page

Here is some guidance on how you as a user can start with simple prompts to initiate conversations with ChatGPT and get comfortable with interaction between yourself and the ChatGPT interface. Don't be afraid to ask the question again and again in different ways if you don't get the response you like or that doesn't make sense. I've also learned that it sometimes pays to simply start a new "Chat" with a rewritten prompt if things seem to get stuck. You'll begin to see how changing a question in small ways can make a huge difference in the reply you receive.

1. Ask for Recipes: A great way to begin is by requesting recipes, such as "Give me a recipe for a spinach cream sauce" or "Provide me a recipe for a pot roast in a crockpot". This allows you to explore ChatGPT's culinary knowledge and can lead to fun cooking experiments. You’ll be amazed at the level of detail that ChatGPT can provide. Also, try to change the prompt/question, you'll get different recipes I can assure you.

2. Quotes and Mantras: Another approach is to seek inspiration. For example, you can ask ChatGPT to "Give me an inspirational quote or mantra that I can repeat daily." ChatGPT can provide you with motivational quotes, affirmations, or even personalized mantras to uplift your spirits. Again, change the request if you don’t get what you think you should get or change it up by asking the same question just to see the variations of response that you receive. In this prompt, you can focus the mantra you receive to a given religion such as Christianity, Islam, or Buddha. Experiment!

3. General Knowledge: Start with general questions to learn more about specific topics. For instance, you can ask, "Tell me about the history of the Pacific Southwest." This lets you explore ChatGPT's knowledge on various subjects. This can lead to more detailed questions as you drill down on a given question. As an example, "When was the Marine Base called Camp Pendleton established?”. (Camp Pendleton is in North San Diego County just outside of Oceanside California. Ask ChatGPT, it'll confirm that!)

4. Get Creative: Encourage creativity by asking for writing prompts. You could try, "Give me a writing prompt for a short story." ChatGPT can stimulate your imagination with interesting ideas, and you may end up with a short story you can read to your kids at bedtime or even publish. Here's a prompt that I used in this situation, what'll you try? "In the thick forests of the Pacific Northwest, a retired television executive discovers an abandoned cabin deep in the woods. Inside, he stumbles upon a mysterious diary that reveals a captivating secret from the past. Write a story about the secrets uncovered and their impact on the executive's life. Limit to 1000 words.”. If you don’t like the first one, ask ChatGPT the question again or simply push the "regenerate” button that displays just under ChatGPT’s last response. See the CHATGPT-3.5 response titled "Mysterious Diary" below.

5. Conversational Starters: Begin a casual conversation by asking about a favorite movie or book recommendation. For instance, you can ask, "Can you recommend a classic novel for me to read?" and based on the information that you entered into the "Custom Instructions” you will likely get a few very intriguing ideas. Note that as of the time of this writing ChatGPT-3.5 has data available up to January 2022 so keep that in mind if asking about more current event-type topics, materials, or books.

6. Learning and Education: If you want to learn something new, consider prompts like, "Explain the concept of quantum physics in simple terms." ChatGPT can provide explanations and insights to help you grasp complex topics. I like to ask this type of question and instruct ChatGPT to formulate its response so a 15-year-old (or whatever age) can understand. We’ll go into how to use ChatGPT as a mentor and or teacher later in this eBook. It’s all about how you ask the questions that get that type of interaction started but it certainly is possible!

These simple prompts are great for breaking the ice and getting comfortable with ChatGPT's responses. As you become more at ease, you can gradually explore more complex and specific questions or tasks. Feel free to experiment and have fun with the interaction. Remember that you are interacting with a computer that doesn't get tired of your questions. So ask away!

 Clear and Concise
 top of page

In the world of human and AI interactions, the clarity and conciseness of your input text is essential for achieving effective and meaningful responses from AI models like ChatGPT-3.5. Clear and concise input not only helps the AI understand your intentions but also enhances the quality of the responses it generates. In this section we'll delve into the significance of clear and concise input, providing examples of what to do and what not to do to ensure your interactions with ChatGPT are productive and rewarding.

Why Clarity and Conciseness Matter

To appreciate the importance of clear and concise input, it's crucial to understand how AI models like ChatGPT work. These models rely on patterns and context in the input they receive to generate responses. Ambiguous or overly lengthy input can lead to misinterpretation and, consequently, less accurate or relevant responses.

1. Clarity Enhances Understanding: When you provide clear and straightforward input, the AI can better comprehend your question or request. This clarity reduces the chances of miscommunication and ensures that the AI's response aligns with your intended purpose.

2. Conciseness Aids Efficiency: Concise input not only makes the AI's task easier but also promotes efficiency. By avoiding unnecessary wordiness, you streamline the interaction, receiving quicker and more to-the-point responses.

What to Do: Effective Examples

1. Ask Direct Questions: Begin your interaction with a specific and concise question. For instance, instead of saying, "Provide me with some information about the history of the United States?” you can instead ask, "Tell me about U.S. history beginning after the Civil War.” I usually give a word count to stick to in my prompts, maybe 1000 words or the responses can get overwhelming very quickly.

2. Use Specific Keywords: Incorporate relevant keywords or phrases to focus your query. If you're interested in AI ethics, you might ask, "Explain AI ethics and principles.” versus "Explain what AI thinks is Ok or not Ok about human and computer interaction and the ethics behind that thinking”. Try both versions of the questions and review the differences in the responses. Short, concise, and clear is virtually always better.

3. Provide Context: When necessary, offer context to ensure the AI understands the framework of your question. For instance, if you want information about a specific historical event, mention the event's name, dates, and any other relevant facts that you can.

4. Break Down Complex Queries: If you have a complex question, consider breaking it into smaller, more digestible parts. For example, instead of asking, "What are the effects of climate change on the environment, economy, and society?” you could inquire about each aspect separately. Note that ChatGPT stores your conversations "per chat” (see the menu on the left of the interface), so once all separate topics are covered you can then ask "Now tie these responses together and give me a synopsis”. Again, I’d suggest word limits, or the responses can get long very quickly…

What Not to Do: Ineffective Examples

1. Avoid Ambiguity: Vague or ambiguous input can lead to unclear responses. For instance, “Tell me about it” without context (as in a new prompt) leaves the AI guessing about the topic except of course when that question is part of an established “Chat Session”. In the earlier example question of “Tell me about U.S. history beginning after the Civil War”, you could simply ask ChatGPT to “Tell me about it” and believe me it will!

2. Steer Clear of Repetition: Repeating the same query in various ways within a single input can confuse the AI. Instead of asking, “What is the weather forecast today? What's the weather like right now? Tell me about today's weather.” ask a single clear question. Another example, asking about the “history” of a topic and its “current status” in a single sentence can lead to fragmented and confusing responses.

3. Minimize Jargon and Slang: While ChatGPT-3.5 has a broad vocabulary, excessive use of jargon or slang can hinder its comprehension of your question. Stick to plain language whenever possible and you’ll appreciate and enjoy the interaction substantially more.

Tips for Effective Prompts

Proofread Your Prompts: Before submitting your question or request, take a moment to review it for clarity and conciseness. ChatGPT has an excellent "Spell Check" as part of its prompt, you should use it.

Use Natural Language: While being concise is important, ensure your prompt sounds natural and conversational. Note that you can instruct ChatGPT in the"Custom Instructions" on what type of tone; relaxed, formal, or professional, to use in its responses. If you decide a response should be outside those parameters, simply add that as part of your question. For example, "' Tell me about the history of the United States after the Civil War' and make your response formal for use in a paper I'm writing."

Ask for Clarification: If the AI's response is unclear or doesn't fully address your query, don't hesitate to ask for clarification or rephrase your question to achieve the results you are looking for.

Practice and Learn: The more you interact with AI models like ChatGPT, the better you'll become at crafting clear and concise input. Experiment all the time!

The effectiveness of your interactions with AI models like ChatGPT hinges on your ability to provide clear and concise prompts or input. By following the guidelines and examples provided, you can ensure that your questions and requests are understood accurately, resulting in more valuable and satisfying responses. Clarity and conciseness are the keys to unlocking the full potential of AI-driven conversations and will allow you to take your skills with ChatGPT to the next level in the chapters to come.

Experiment with different prompts to observe variations in responses.

Embarking on the journey of interacting with ChatGPT is akin to setting out on an uncharted adventure. Each prompt input is a step into an incredible expanse of possibilities. As a beginner, the key to unlocking the full potential of this tool lies not just in asking questions but in how you ask them. I encourage you to experiment with different prompts, observe the variations in responses, and adapt your approach based on the feedback you receive.

Think of ChatGPT as a conversational partner with an immense depth of knowledge, waiting to be tapped into. However, this partner speaks a language governed by algorithms and programming. The way you phrase your questions or prompts can significantly influence the nature and quality of the responses you receive. Therefore, experimentation is not just beneficial; it's essential for anyone looking to master the art of eliciting the most insightful, accurate, and relevant responses from ChatGPT.

So, I'll repeat, start with simple queries to get a feel for the conversation. Notice how a straightforward question yields a direct answer. Then, gradually introduce complexity into your prompts. Ask for explanations and examples on a given subject. Each adjustment in your prompt is a new variable in this experiment that you are engaging in, offering insights into how ChatGPT processes information and understands context so your abilities will grow and flourish.

One fascinating aspect of working with ChatGPT is its ability to generate creative content. Here, the room for experimentation broadens. You can test how slight changes in your prompts affect the tone, style, or direction of creative outputs. For instance, asking for a story set in a futuristic city will yield different narratives compared to asking for a story with the same setting but with a focus on a specific character or theme. This process of trial and error is not just about getting different results; it's about understanding the process of creative generation within ChatGPT. Also remember that you can set tone, style, and direction in the "Custom Instructions" that will flavor much of what you get back from ChatGPT. (Always keep in mind what you entered into your Custom Instructions because every response that you receive will hold that flavor. You'll need to reset those instructions in your prompts if you don't want them used in the responses you receive.)

Moreover, adapting your approach based on ChatGPT's responses is crucial. If a response doesn't meet your expectations, analyze why. Was the prompt too vague? Too specific? Did it assume knowledge that ChatGPT might not have, especially anything of a more recent timeline? Use this feedback loop to refine your questions. The evolution of your prompts over time is a testimony to your growing understanding and skill in interacting with AI. Again I highly recommend that you keep a log (digital for easy search and retrieval) of your prompts and ChatGPT's responses. This will aid you significantly when you hit a roadblock, yet just know that you made something work in the past.

So again, I'll state, don't shy away from experimenting with your prompts. Embrace the process of learning through trial and error. The more you test, observe, and adapt, the more proficient you'll become at harnessing the power of ChatGPT.

The Creative and Diverse Nature of ChatGPT's Output

As you dive into the world of ChatGPT, you'll uncover a landscape rich with creativity and diversity, a testament to the incredible capabilities of artificial intelligence. ChatGPT, with its vast knowledge base and sophisticated algorithms, is not just a tool for answering questions but a canvas for creative expression and exploration. This highlights the limitless creativity and varied output of ChatGPT, encouraging beginners to experiment and discover the many facets of this remarkable AI.

Imagine having a conversation with an entity that can switch from being a knowledgeable historian to a creative writer, then to a problem-solving mathematician, all within the span of a few interactions. ChatGPT's ability to generate diverse outputs stems from its training on an expansive array of text from books, websites, and other sources. This training allows it to understand and produce output in ways that mimic human creativity and insight.

For those just beginning their journey with ChatGPT, such as yourself, it's important to approach it with a sense of curiosity and openness to experimentation (Seeing the constant theme here?). I’d like to suggest asking ChatGPT to write a poem or a short story based on a prompt you provide. You'll be amazed at the detail, emotion, and creativity that ChatGPT can inject into its writing. Each prompt you give can lead to vastly different stories or poems, showcasing the AI's ability to generate unique and diverse content.

Try this experiment, give ChatGPT these 2 prompts, and review the differences in the output between the 2 simply by changing the environment in which the story is placed. It can be amazing!

Prompt #1: Write me a short story about a man and his dog living in the woods of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado for a summer. Keep it to 1000 words or less.

Prompt #2: Write me a short story about a man and his dog living in the heart of the city of Denver Colorado for a summer. Keep it to 1000 words or less.

The creativity of ChatGPT isn't limited to just writing. It can also craft dialogues, jokes, and even simulate interviews with historical figures or fictional characters. By experimenting with different types of prompts, you'll learn not only about the breadth of ChatGPT's knowledge but also about its capacity for creativity. You might ask it to write a dialogue between two famous scientists discussing a modern theory, or to create a comedic exchange between characters from different time periods. The results can be both enlightening and entertaining, illustrating the flexibility and adaptability of ChatGPT's responses.

Moreover, ChatGPT can be a tool for creative problem-solving. When faced with a challenge, whether it's brainstorming ideas for a project or finding innovative solutions to a problem, ChatGPT's responses can offer new perspectives and ideas. This aspect encourages you as a beginner to think outside the box and leverage the AI's ability to connect contrasting concepts in novel ways.

Experimentation is key to unlocking the creative potential of ChatGPT. By varying your prompts and exploring different themes, styles, and questions, you'll not only gain a deeper understanding of how ChatGPT operates but also discover the vast possibilities it offers for creative exploration.

 Setting Expectations
 top of page

In exploring the capabilities of ChatGPT, it's essential for you as a beginner to understand not just the strengths, but also the limitations of this advanced technology. AI is an incredibly powerful tool and one of the core challenges with ChatGPT is its potential to inherit and even propagate biases present in the data it was trained on. Since it learns from the enormous dataset of digitized human existence, AI can inadvertently reflect societal biases, whether related to gender, race, or any other characteristic if that is the type of data that ChatGPT was trained with. This doesn't mean ChatGPT is inherently biased, but rather that it mirrors the imperfections of the information it has been trained with. We as humans ARE flawed, like it or not so keep in mind the old saying; "Garbage in Garbage Out" as you work your ChatGPT prompts.

Also, keep in mind that ChatGPT's knowledge is current only up to a certain point in time (January 2022 for ChatTPP-3.5 as I write this), which means it may not have information on recent events or developments. This is critical to remember, especially when seeking up-to-date information or insights into ongoing situations as ChatGPT may simply not have any knowledge of such recent topics. Interestingly enough ChatGPT will tell you if it can't respond for whatever reason and you'll have to visit your favorite online search engine for this up-to-date information.

As powerful as ChatGPT is, users, especially beginners, must approach it with a critical mind. Relying blindly on its output without considering potential biases and inaccuracies can lead to incorrect assumptions. Users are encouraged to use ChatGPT as a tool for generating ideas, suggestions, and insights, but always with a layer of personal judgment and verification. Always remember that ChatGPT is in essence a computer and CAN be incorrect or untrained on a specific topic and give out incorrect or biased information. You'll notice that the prompt page states very clearly that "ChatGPT can make mistakes. Consider checking important information". I couldn't agree more!

 Refining Prompts
 top of page

One of the most valuable skills you can develop when interacting with ChatGPT is your ability to refine your prompts. This isn't just about making your questions clearer; it's about directing the conversation toward more relevant, unbiased outcomes. Remember, ChatGPT responds based on the inputs it receives. The more precise and considerate your prompts, the better the quality of the responses you'll get.

Refining your prompts serves two important functions. First, it helps you navigate around the AI's inherent limitations. By clearly outlining the context of your question(s) and specifying the type of information or perspective you're looking for, you guide ChatGPT to provide answers that are not only more accurate but also more aligned with your intentions. This level of specificity in your questions is key to unlocking ChatGPT's full potential without inadvertently echoing possible biases present in the data with which it was trained.

Second, refining your prompts encourages you to engage more thoughtfully and interactively with ChatGPT. It requires you to examine your possible preconceptions and preferences when formulating questions. This self-reflection is crucial when interacting with any technology, acting as a safeguard to ensure your use of AI tools like ChatGPT leads to informed, nuanced perspectives, rather than perpetuating misconceptions or partial truths.

Learning to refine your prompts isn't just a technical skill-it's a practice in critical thinking and responsible AI engagement. I encourage you to refine your prompts not only to improve your experience with ChatGPT but also to promote a more mindful and ethical approach to using artificial intelligence.

 Prompt Engineering
 top of page

Authors Note: This is a quick recap that sums up some things we've learned so far, specifically to ingrain these concepts into the grey matter before we move on. These are critical skills to have a solid grasp of so that you can build on them and move past the "playing with ChatGPT" phase and into an "I have skills to work with" phase.

Prompt engineering is essentially the craft of designing and refining the questions or instructions you give to a language model like ChatGPT. The way you frame a prompt significantly impacts the type of response you get.

A few key aspects to keep in mind:

Refining Clarity: By making your prompt more specific, you remove ambiguity. This is like giving a clear, concise script to an actor, ensuring they understand exactly what is needed for the scene. For instance, instead of asking "Tell me about history" ask "Can you provide an overview of the American Revolutionary War focusing on key battles?"

Adding Detail: Including more details in your prompt can help ChatGPT understand the context and the depth of information you're seeking. For example, "Explain quantum mechanics" versus "Explain quantum mechanics and its application in modern technology." A big difference between these two prompts to ChatGPT.

Adjusting Tone and Format: Specifying the tone or format you prefer (e.g., casual, professional, bullet points, an essay) helps ensure the final product meets your expectations. "Write a short story about a talking dog" could be tweaked to "Write a short, humorous story about a talking dog, making it suitable for a children's book."

Iterative Refinement: Sometimes you might not get the desired outcome on the first try and for more complex topics it happens often! So, plan to tweak your prompts repeatedly, thus modifying your prompt with more guidance and/or clarity, and try again. You'll see the desired outcome arise as you go through this process.

Leveraging Keywords: Certain keywords trigger specific modes of response. For example, using "summarize" vs. "explain in detail" signals to ChatGPT the depth of response you're looking for. This goes back to the "Iterative Refinement" step above except focusing on the changes that new "keywords" can bring about.

By adjusting your prompts in the ways listed above, you essentially guide ChatGPT to better understand your request. This process of fine-tuning helps ensure that the responses you receive are more aligned with your expectations and needs. Remember that like all skills it takes time, practice, and refinement to achieve a high level of success.

 Leveraging Keywords
 top of page

Next I want to share some insights into how you can harness the power of specific keywords in your prompts to guide ChatGPT's focus effectively. This skill is not just about communicating with an AI; it's about shaping the conversation to get the results that you want. This is where the true nitty gritty hits the fan folks and if you absorb nothing else in this book, absorb this!

First, you've got to understand what keywords are in the context of ChatGPT. Keywords are the example that guides the AI in understanding not only the topic of interest but also the depth and angle you wish to explore. These aren't just random words; they are carefully chosen to steer the conversation in a direction that aligns with your goals.  I cannot stress hard enough just how critical those last 2 sentences are!  Ok, OK, off the soap box...

For beginners, it might seem daunting at first, but the truth is, that leveraging keywords is more about clarity and purpose than technical expertise. When you craft a prompt, every word counts, but the keywords shine a spotlight on what matters to you the most.

Let me share an example to illustrate this point. Suppose we're interested in gardening, specifically organic gardening. If we ask ChatGPT, "Tell me about gardening" the response will be broad, covering various aspects of gardening, probably overwhelming since we gave no word count to limit the response. However, if we refine our prompt to "Explain the principles of organic gardening" we've used "principles" and "organic gardening" as keywords to narrow down the focus. ChatGPT now understands that we're not looking for information on gardening in general, but specifically on the foundational concepts of organic gardening.

Furthermore, suppose we want to delve deeper into a specific aspect, like pest control in organic gardening. By adjusting your prompt to "What are natural pest control methods in organic gardening?" we've added "natural pest control methods" to our keywords. This doesn't just guide the AI towards the topic of pest control but also emphasizes our interest in natural methods, fine-tuning the response even further.

Another tip for leveraging keywords effectively is to consider the level of detail you are seeking. For instance, adding "overview," "detailed," or "step-by-step" can significantly alter the depth of the response. A prompt like "Give me a detailed overview of natural pest control methods in organic gardening" signals to ChatGPT that we're not just looking for a list of methods but a comprehensive explanation for each option presented.

Experimentation (there is that word again!) plays a crucial role in mastering the use of keywords. It's about trial and error, seeing how slight changes in our prompts can lead to different responses. This process isn't just about getting answers; it's a learning journey that enhances our understanding of how AI interprets your requests.

As you navigate through your conversations with ChatGPT, remember that the art of leveraging keywords is your bridge to precise and meaningful interactions. It's not just about asking questions; it's about asking the right questions with the right words. As beginners, embarking on this journey with a curious mind and a willingness to experiment will not only make our experience with ChatGPT more rewarding but also transform us into proficient communicators in the realm of AI.

 Roleplaying & Storytelling
 top of page

I want to take some time and explore the creative side of ChatGPT by engaging in roleplaying scenarios as well as narrative-driven responses, i.e. storytelling.

In the fascinating landscape of ChatGPT, two of the most engaging activities are roleplaying and storytelling. These modes of interaction offer a canvas for creativity, allowing us to manufacture narratives or step into the shoes of characters from any universe we can imagine. The beauty of engaging with ChatGPT in these ways lies in the detailed, carefully crafted prompts we provide, which set the stage for immersive experiences.

Roleplaying with ChatGPT allows us to assume the identity of someone else, perhaps a historical figure, a fictional character, or even an inanimate object, and interact with the AI as if we were that entity. This exercise not only flexes our creative muscles but also enhances our understanding of perspectives different from our own. Crafting a prompt for roleplaying requires clarity in defining the character and setting, as well as the scenario in which the interaction takes place.

For example:
1. "I am a medieval knight preparing for a joust. Describe my morning routine and the emotions I feel as I ready myself."
2. "You are a detective, and I am the mysterious person you've just interviewed about a recent heist. Continue our dialogue, focusing on your growing suspicions."
3. "Imagine I'm a pioneer on Mars. Outline a typical day for me, including any challenges I face and how I overcome them."

Each of these prompts invites ChatGPT into a unique scenario, prompting it to generate content that adheres to the roles and settings that you’ve established. Add various factors such as weather, time of year, or other characters to your prompts and experience the changes these can make to the overall story. Did you notice in #2 that you asked ChatGPT to be a “detective” and you are a completely different character? This asks ChatGPT to "become" a character in your scenario. And just as easilyy you could tell ChatGPT to be two or more characters in your prompts. The options are unlimited and remember that it’s all about the little things…

Storytelling, on the other hand, launches you into a world where you can create and explore narratives of your particular design. Whether it's crafting a tale from scratch or continuing an existing story, the prompts you provide should guide ChatGPT in developing the plot, characters, and setting in a direction that intrigues you.

Here are three examples of storytelling prompts:
1. "Begin a story set in a future where humanity lives underwater. Introduce the protagonist, a young inventor, and the problem they're trying to solve."
2. "Continue the tale of the lost city of Zerzura. The last expedition found an ancient map leading to its gates. What happens next?"
3. "Write a story about a time-traveling cat who accidentally changes historical events. Start with its arrival in ancient Egypt."

By inserting these prompts into the ChatGPT interface, you're not just asking for information; you're co-creating stories and scenarios, guiding the AI to unfold tales and interactions that captivate and inspire. This process isn't just about the result achieved; it's about engaging with the journey, understanding the nuances of your chosen roles, and the paths your stories take as a result.

I encourage you as a beginner to delve into roleplaying and storytelling with ChatGPT to invite yourself into a world of limitless imagination. These activities not only provide entertainment but also deepen your engagement with language, culture, and perspective. So, I urge you to take these prompts, plug them into your ChatGPT interface, and embark on an adventure of your creation. Witness firsthand how your carefully crafted prompts bring to life scenarios and stories that resonate with your curiosity and creativity.

Then, since this is a book about learning, determine the keywords of each prompt and explore how much, or not, changing, adding, or even removing keywords changes each of your scenarios. Experiment, enjoy, and learn. You'll soon see what remarkable differences specific keyword changes make.

In my exploration of ChatGPT, I've discovered the art of constructing prompts to elicit narrative-driven responses. This art is not just about asking questions; it's about setting the stage for a story, guiding AI to weave tales that captivate and entertain. The key lies in the details of your prompts, think of them as the brushstrokes in a painting, defining the shape and color of the narrative.

Let me share with you how subtle changes to a prompt can significantly alter the narrative you receive. It's a process that combines creativity with precision, allowing you to tailor the responses to suit your vision. Here are three examples of prompts that demonstrate this technique. I once again urge you to experiment with these in your ChatGPT interface, observing how each modification influences the story's direction.

Story 1: A Day in the Life
Example 1: "Tell me about a day in the life of a spaceship captain."
Example 2: "Describe a day in the life of a young spaceship captain on their first deep-space mission, facing an unexpected cosmic phenomenon."

The initial prompt provides a broad setting. By specifying the captain's experience level and introducing an unforeseen event, the revised prompt sets the stage for a more engaging and specific narrative, filled with potential for character development and suspense.

Story 2: The Mysterious Artifact
Example 1: "Write a story about finding an ancient artifact."
Example 2: "Craft a tale about a disillusioned archaeologist who uncovers a mysterious artifact believed to alter time, hidden within an undiscovered tomb in Egypt."

In this revision, the narrative gains depth through the addition of character motivation, a unique artifact with specific powers, and a vivid setting. This encourages a more detailed and immersive story, inviting readers into a world of adventure and mystery.

Story 3: The Forgotten Kingdom
Example 1: "Tell a story about a lost kingdom."
Example 2: "Weave a narrative about a group of childhood friends who stumble upon the map to a forgotten kingdom, rumored to be magical, in their elderly neighbor's attic during a summer storm."

By enriching the context with characters, their relationship, a compelling setting, and a hint of supernatural intrigue, the prompt transforms into a blueprint for a story that promises exploration, bonds of friendship, and an element of danger.

These examples illustrate the power of detailed, specific prompts in shaping the narrative you wish to explore with ChatGPT. By adjusting the elements of your prompt—characters, setting, conflict, and specific details—you can guide the AI to produce stories that align more closely with your vision.

I encourage you to take these example prompts, experiment with them in your ChatGPT interface, and observe how small changes can lead to significant differences in the narratives. This exercise is not just about understanding the mechanics of prompt construction; it's about unlocking the full potential of your creativity and ChatGPT's storytelling capabilities. Through practice, you'll learn to craft prompts that are not only precise in their request but also rich in narrative possibility.

Go ahead and provide ChatGPT with a story prompt and if you get a reply that you like, add another prompt that suggests to ChatGPT a direction to take as the 2nd step. If that doesn't work try another option or direction. If it did work then build upon that and keep the story going. You will honestly be amazed at how quickly you can create an incredible narrative.  Another approach is to have ChatGPT do an Outline of  a story and then use that outline to interact with ChatGPT to write the story, adding, detracting, or changing directions as you go.

 Technical Queries and Code
 top of page

One of the most enlightening discoveries for me has been ChatGPT's adeptness in engaging in technical discussions and providing coding assistance. This revelation opened a new realm of possibilities, transforming ChatGPT from merely a conversational partner or storyteller into a valuable resource for learning and problem-solving in the world of programming (and other areas such as languages!).

For beginners stepping into the vast universe of coding, the idea of discussing complex technical concepts or seeking coding help might seem daunting. However, ChatGPT, with its vast knowledge base and understanding of programming languages, will guide you through your coding adventures. It's akin to having a mentor who's always available and ready to help, offer explanations, and even code examples to help you grasp the fundamentals and beyond. And it never gets tired or grumpy!

Let me share how to construct prompts that leverage ChatGPT's capabilities in technical discussions and coding assistance. These examples will not only introduce basic coding concepts but also encourage you to experiment with ChatGPT as a tool for learning and problem-solving.

Example 1: Hello World Script
Prompt: "Show me how to write a 'Hello World' script in Python and implement that script?
This is the quintessential first step for any novice programmer. A 'Hello World' script is a simple program that outputs "Hello, World!" on the screen. It's a fundamental exercise that introduces you to the syntax and structure of a programming language.

Example 2: Basic Arithmetic Operations
Prompt: "Explain how to perform basic arithmetic operations in JavaScript and show me how to write and implement that script."
Understanding arithmetic operations is crucial in programming. This prompt encourages ChatGPT to explain and demonstrate how to execute operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in JavaScript, providing a foundation for more complex mathematical coding tasks.

Example 3: Creating a Simple Web Page
Prompt: "Guide me through creating a simple web page that displays a greeting. I’ll choose the greeting."
This prompt takes a step further into the world of web development. It's an invitation for ChatGPT to assist you in crafting the HTML and CSS (and possibly JavaScript) necessary to create a web page that greets visitors, introducing you to the basics of web design and programming.

By inputting these prompts into the ChatGPT interface, you as a beginner can embark on a learning journey that extends beyond theoretical knowledge to practical coding skills. Each prompt is designed to not only teach you a specific concept or task but also to inspire you to explore further, ask more detailed questions, and even tackle troubleshooting and debugging with ChatGPT's assistance if you extend yourself and try new things. ChatGPT will be there to back you, like the great mentor that it can be.

Encountering errors and challenges is a natural part of the coding process. ChatGPT can be a supportive mentor in diagnosing issues in your code, offering explanations, and guiding you toward solutions. The key is to be specific about the problem you're facing, including any error messages or unexpected behavior you're encountering.

I encourage you to use these examples as a starting point for your dialogues with ChatGPT. Delve into technical discussions, seek coding assistance, and let your curiosity lead you through the intricate and rewarding path of programming.

Now let's dig into coding a bit deeper, at least from the perspective of how ChatGPT can help. I've done a good deal of coding in the past and would have literally broken down and cried to learn that a tool such as ChatGPT was available to help me like it can you. Spending MANY hours with my nose in books, as well as hours more of trial and error was the only available alternative. If you want to learn to do coding in a specific genre, use ChatGPT to help you, you'll be glad you did. Now back to the business at hand...

Creating effective prompts for obtaining code snippets and explanations from ChatGPT involves being clear and specific about what you're asking for. Here are some examples of well-constructed prompts that can help you get precise code examples and thorough explanations for various programming tasks and concepts. These prompts get more in-depth as you go along but don't worry, the goal here is to show the capabilities of ChatGPT not instantly turn you into a world-renowned programmer.

Basic Python Function
Prompt: "Give me a Python code snippet that defines a function named `calculate_area` which takes two parameters, `length` and `width`, and returns the area of a rectangle? Also, explain how the function works."

JavaScript DOM Manipulation
Prompt: "Provide me a JavaScript snippet that changes the text of an HTML element with the ID 'greeting' to 'Hello, World!'. Explain the steps involved in accessing and modifying the DOM element."

CSS Flexbox Layout
Prompt: "I need a CSS snippet that demonstrates how to use Flexbox to create a responsive layout with one main content area and two sidebars. Explain how Flexbox properties are applied to achieve this layout?"

SQL Query for Data Retrieval
Prompt: "Provide an SQL query that selects all columns from a table named `customers` where the `country` is 'Canada'. Include an explanation of how this query filters the results."

HTML Form Creation
Prompt: "How do I create an HTML form that includes text input for a user's name and email, and a submit button? Explain the purpose of each element in the form."

API Request with Python's requests Library Prompt: "Write a Python code snippet that makes a GET request to a public API endpoint https://api.example.com/data, and prints the response. Explain how the requests library is used to make API calls."

When asking for technical help or code snippets, be sure to mention the programming language, libraries, or frameworks you're using, and describe the specific task or concept you need help with. Including these details and asking for explanations about why the code works the way it does can significantly improve the relevance and accuracy of the responses you get. Instructing ChatGPT to provide explanations alongside code snippets not only helps you understand the "how" but also the "why" behind the solution, deepening your learning experience.

 Proofreading
 top of page

As I was working on a long and detailed document not long ago, I realized I needed help with a few grammar issues and discovered an indispensable ally in ChatGPT (this is actually why I found and began to explore ChatGPT; to help my writing). It's not just an assistant; it was like having an ever-present adviser who helped guide me through the nuances of language and the intricacies of effective communication. In this section, my goal is to share how ChatGPT can become your go-to tool for proofreading, ensuring your writing is not only error-free, uses the correct tone, and is also polished and impactful.

Writing, at its core, is an art form, but even the most skilled artists need a fresh set of eyes on their work. And if you're not an artist, which I am not, it makes using ChatGPT an even greater imperative. That's where ChatGPT shines. Whether you're drafting an email, composing a blog post, or penning a post for a blog, ChatGPT can meticulously review your text for grammar, punctuation, spelling, and style inconsistencies. Yes if you are writing in Word or Google those platforms can do many of these things but ChatGPT can take it to that next level. Here's how it can transform your writing:

Grammar and Punctuation Checks: ChatGPT helps identify and correct common grammatical mistakes and punctuation errors, ensuring your sentences are structurally sound. If I mistakenly write, "He does'nt understand the impact of his words," ChatGPT would correct it too, "He doesn't understand the impact of his words."

Spelling Corrections: Beyond simple typos, ChatGPT can detect incorrectly used words that might slip past traditional spellchecks. For example, converting "Their happy with the outcome" to "They're happy with the outcome."

Style and Tone Adjustments: ChatGPT can also advise on adjusting the tone to better suit your intended audience, making your writing more formal or conversational as needed.

Enhancing Clarity and Flow: ChatGPT can suggest changes to improve the coherence of your ideas, ensuring your writing flows naturally from one point to the next, something I have always struggled with.

To utilize ChatGPT effectively for proofreading, follow these steps:

1. Provide Clear Instructions: Specify your needs by asking, for example, "Can you help proofread this text for any grammatical errors and ensure it's clear and concise?" Think back to Stage 2 Section 2, Basic Interactions.

2. Input Your Text: Start by pasting the text you wish to proofread into the chat. (Note that the character input limit for proofreading varies depending on the platform or interface you're using so keep that in mind.)

3. Review and Apply Suggestions: Evaluate ChatGPT's feedback. It’s crucial to consider each suggestion and apply what best aligns with your intended message and style. Always remember what it says directly under the ChatGPT Prompt entry, “ChatGPT can make mistakes. Consider checking important information.”

4. Iterate as Needed: Feel free to ask for further revisions or clarifications. ChatGPT is patient and can assist through multiple rounds of edits. This is a must to remember; ChatGPT never tires, never sleeps, and never gets angry or annoyed even if you do! Ask Away!

A common concern is where your document ends up after you share it with ChatGPT. Based on my research and that of others the text or data you input for proofreading remains between you and ChatGPT, not venturing beyond your computer nor into a shared OpenAI library. This ensures that your creative endeavors and personal writings remain confidential, allowing you to use ChatGPT as a secure proofreading tool. It is though advised to limit or refrain from entering personal information into ChatGPT, yours, or anyone else's.

Involving ChatGPT as a part of your writing process is like unlocking a new level of creativity and clarity in your work. It's not just about correcting errors; it's about refining your voice and making your message resonate. Remember, every great writer has a great editor behind them, and that sentiment reflects the crucial role editors play in shaping and refining a writer's work, making it the best it can be. The collaboration between a writer and their editor is often key to the success of a piece of writing, whether it's a book, an article, or any form of written content. This partnership helps in honing the clarity, flow, and impact of the writing, ensuring that the final product resonates well with its intended audience.

With ChatGPT, you can access a tireless, insightful, and, most importantly, private proofreading assistant, ready to elevate your writing from good to exceptional.

ChatGPT-3.5 stands as a remarkable achievement in AI development, offering a glimpse into the future of human-AI interaction. Its comprehensive capabilities in proofreading, programming, storytelling, and beyond not only showcase its technical prowess but also its potential to inspire innovation, enhance productivity, and foster creativity. As you continue to explore the boundaries of what AI can achieve, ChatGPT-3.5 serves as both a tool and a muse, empowering you as its user to achieve your goals with greater efficiency and imagination. This blend of practical utility and creative potential makes ChatGPT-3.5 an essential tool for anyone like yourself looking to expand your writing, programming, or storytelling.

AND THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING!

A couple of quick ChatGPT hacks before you go, ChatGPT is designed to be a conversation and if you change the way you interact with ChatGPT you can get ChatGPT to give you perfect prompts every time. Just ask ChatGPT how to prompt it, like this: "Can you help me do "X", "Y" and "Z"? It will virtually always answer "yes" and then proceed to tell you what you have to give it to achieve "X", "Y" and "Z". And should you get stuck, it does happen, simply ask ChatGPT, "What more do I need to give you to accomplish this?". Now here's an exceptionally nice touch, once you get your perfect response, ask ChatGPT "What is the exact prompt I'd have to give you next time to get this result?". Remember that notebook that I suggested at the beginning of this book? Here's why that suggestion was made though I understand that a spreadsheet works very well for this as well...

Back to Voice Versus Text
Communicate by Voice

"I'd be happy to walk you through how you can communicate with me using voice instead of text. It's a pretty straightforward process, but it does depend on using specific platforms or devices that have voice capabilities integrated. Here's a general outline of the steps you'd typically follow:

1. Choose the Right Platform or Device: First off, you'll need to use a platform or device that supports voice interactions with AI, like smartphones with Google Assistant, Siri, or Alexa, or smart speakers and displays.
2. Enable Voice Assistant: Make sure the voice assistant feature is enabled on your device. This might require you to go through some setup processes, like agreeing to terms, training the assistant to recognize your voice, etc.
3. Install Necessary Apps (If Required): If you're using a specific app to communicate with me, like the OpenAI app or any other third-party app that integrates GPT models for voice interactions, make sure it's installed on your device.
4. Activate the Voice Assistant: Usually, you can activate the voice assistant by saying the wake word (like "Hey Siri," "Ok Google," or "Alexa") or pressing a button.
5. Initiate the Conversation with Me: After activating the voice assistant, you can start the conversation by mentioning you want to talk to me. The exact phrasing can depend on the platform, but it might be something like, "Talk to ChatGPT," or "I want to speak with Sheila (or whatever name you've given your ChatGPT)."
6. Speak Your Queries or Commands: Just speak naturally with your queries or commands. The voice assistant should capture your voice, convert it to text, and then process it as if you had typed it out.
7. Listen to My Response: I'll process your query and generate a response. The voice assistant will read my text response back to you aloud.
8. Continue the Conversation: Just keep talking if you have more questions or need further clarification. The process is very conversational.

Remember, the specific steps can vary slightly depending on the device and software you're using. Some platforms might offer more direct or integrated ways to interact with me by voice. Always ensure your device's software and any relevant apps are up to date to get the best experience.

If you're looking to use voice on a platform that directly doesn't support it, you might need to explore specific workarounds or additional software that can bridge the gap.

Back to Mysterious Diary
Mysterious Diary

In the dense, verdant heart of the Pacific Northwest, where the towering pines and firs whisper ancient tales with every gust of wind, a retired television executive named Jack had taken to the tranquility of nature, leaving behind the clamorous world of broadcast and production. His days were now filled with the serene pastimes of hunting, fishing, and tending to his small homestead, a stark contrast to his former life.

One crisp autumn morning, as Jack ventured deeper into the forest than he usually would, his keen eyes caught the faint outline of an old cabin, cloaked in moss and vines, as if nature itself had tried to keep this place a secret. Curiosity piqued, Jack approached, noting the eerie silence that seemed to envelop the area. The door creaked ominously as he pushed it open, revealing an interior that time had forgotten.

The cabin was sparse, dust motes dancing in the slivers of light piercing through the boarded-up windows. But what caught Jack's attention was a leather-bound diary, its cover worn, resting atop the otherwise empty wooden table. With a reverence for the artifact before him, he carefully opened it, the pages crackling under his touch.

The diary belonged to Elizabeth, a woman who had lived in the cabin during the early 20th century. Through her meticulous entries, Jack was transported to her world, one of hope, love, and an incredible secret that had been buried with the passing years. Elizabeth wrote of her husband, Thomas, a scientist who had become obsessed with the idea of harnessing the energy of the aurora borealis, believing it could revolutionize the world.

Thomas had built what he called the "Aurora Engine" in a hidden workshop behind the cabin. Elizabeth's descriptions of the machine were filled with a mixture of awe and apprehension. She spoke of nights when the sky would come alive with colors more vibrant than any artist could conjure, and Thomas would rush out, convinced that each display was a sign that he was on the brink of a breakthrough.

As autumn gave way to winter, Jack found himself visiting the cabin daily, consumed by Elizabeth's story. Her words painted a picture of a man driven by ambition, yet tethered by his profound love for her. However, as Thomas's experiments grew more frantic, the diary entries became sporadic, and a sense of foreboding crept into Elizabeth's once hopeful tone.

Then, the entries stopped abruptly, with no clue as to their fate. The mystery gnawed at Jack. He felt a connection to Elizabeth and Thomas, their story a haunting echo of his own life's pursuit of success, often at the expense of what truly mattered.

Determined to uncover the truth, Jack scoured the cabin and its surroundings, finally discovering the concealed workshop Elizabeth had written about. Inside, the remnants of the Aurora Engine lay in silence, a testament to Thomas's genius and madness. Jack's expertise in television production and broadcast distribution gave him an appreciation for the ingenuity of the design, even if the science was beyond his understanding.

Armed with the diary and his newfound knowledge, Jack embarked on a quest to piece together the puzzle of what had happened to Elizabeth and Thomas. He reached out to historians, scientists, and anyone who might shed light on the couple's fate and the feasibility of Thomas's invention.

The search led Jack to a retired physicist, Dr. Helen Carter, who was intrigued by the concept of the Aurora Engine. Together, they explored the possibilities of Thomas's theories, blending his early 20th-century ideas with modern technology. Their collaboration sparked not only a breakthrough in renewable energy but also a deep bond forged by their shared pursuit.

The revelation of the Aurora Engine's potential, inspired by a love story hidden in the depths of the forest, became a sensation. Jack, once a seeker of stories for television, had now become part of a story far greater than any he had ever produced. The project honored the memory of Elizabeth and Thomas, their names synonymous with innovation and dedication.

Through this journey, Jack discovered a new purpose. He realized that his true legacy wasn't in the shows he had produced or the deals he had made, but in the lives he touched and the positive change he helped foster. The cabin, once a place of forgotten dreams, became a beacon of hope and innovation.

In the end, Jack's life was irrevocably altered by the secrets uncovered in the thick forests of the Pacific Northwest. Elizabeth and Thomas's story taught him that it's never too late to change course, to seek out the unknown, and to make a meaningful impact on the world. And as he gazed into the night sky, watching the aurora borealis dance in a symphony of light, he felt a deep connection to the past, present, and future, bound by the timeless pursuit of discovery and love.
